The most beautiful cable cars in the Alps – overview, tips & tranquility
Cable cars are the backbone of every Alpine holiday. From peaceful valley stations to dizzying views: we guide you to the most beautiful, quietest and most surprising cable cars in the Alps.
Our favourite cable cars – peace, views and character
As cable car fans, we at BergundBahn have experienced many types over the years. From standard 8-person gondolas to the rotating Titlis lift – we’ve made a selection of cable cars we personally loved. If you're near one of them, don’t miss the ride.
Cabriobahn Stanserhorn (Switzerland)
An open-air cable car without the crowds (unless you’re unlucky). The Cabriobahn combines Swiss precision with a rare sense of freedom. From the upper deck you can literally smell the Alpine air. Perfect for peace-seekers who still want something special. We’ll definitely return.

Seceda (Italy – Val Gardena)
Take the lift up early and enjoy that first view of the Geisler peaks – Seceda is an experience, not an attraction. Walk up to the ridge: the drop behind it is stunning. Despite its popularity, this lift feels calm and well-organised. Go early for a true Dolomite moment.

Penkenbahn (Austria – Finkenberg/Mayrhofen)
While Mayrhofen can be busy, the Penkenbahn is a quiet surprise. The gondola is modern and peaceful, floating between two mountains. Once at the top, you’ll find restaurants and open meadows – but also quiet trails if you know where to go.

Schatzbergbahn (Austria – Auffach)
A personal favourite. From peaceful Auffach, the lift gently climbs towards the Wildschönau mountains. No queues, no noise – just the hum of the lift and the scent of pine. Ideal for anyone chasing that real Alpine feeling.

Quiet cable car experiences
Not all cable cars are peaceful. Some are crowded, chaotic or full of ski equipment. But there are lifts where you float silently uphill, with nothing but the view and the sound of the cable.
Busy lifts are common in places like Zillertal, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn or Hallstatt. But even there you’ll find lesser-known, quieter options – often away from the main top stations. Walk down to the mid-station and you’ll find calm.
At BergundBahn we list every cable car in the Alps – especially those that suit quiet travellers, people with sensory sensitivities or fear of heights. Think silent gondolas, quiet valleys, and stations without music or crowds.
