Black Forest winter landscape
The Black Forest, or Schwarzwald as a winter sports area is not at all strange when you consider that no fewer than 70 peaks rise above 1,000 metres. The good thing is that the Black Forest is not that far to drive from The Netherlands. From Utrecht to Feldberg is about 680 kilometres.
Feldberg
One of the most famous and the highest mountain in the area is the Feldberg. The Feldberg is 1493 metres high and is quite appropriately located in the municipality of Feldberg. This mountain lends itself perfectly to skiing as it is a large barren mountain. A gondola takes you quickly and easily to the top of the mountain. The total Black Forest ski area contains as many as 170 ski lifts, 1,700 metres of groomed cross-country trails, 250 kilometres of ski slopes, many hiking trails and 13 ski jumps.
Freiburg
If you're heading to the Black Forest, don't forget to plan a day in Freiburg. Freiburg is a medium-sized city with just over 220,000 inhabitants. The city has a beautiful, old city centre that is definitely worth a visit. A water channel runs right through the centre, adding extra atmosphere to the city.
The certainty of a white landscape does not exist these days, but the area around the Feldberg has a certain degree of snow security. Other ski resorts include Baiersbronn and Todtmoos. Ski lovers can also have a great time in these areas. In short, the Black Forest is more than just a wine region. It is also a great place for a skiing holiday. The higher peaks in the area such as the Belchen, the Feldberg and the Herzogenhorn almost always have snow in winter.
