An adventurous family hike in the mountains
I have fond memories of hiking in the mountains when I was little. We often walked towards an alpine hut, where we could rest and have something to eat and drink. We took regular breaks along the way and the hike felt like an adventure. Especially when we had to cross a stream and I tried hard to keep my feet dry. Along the way I enjoyed the surroundings with the beautiful view and I was amazed at how quickly we climbed. The pleasure of hiking in the mountains was born from this and has never gone away.
A mountain hike with children is therefore more than just a sporting activity. It is a journey of discovery full of wonder, fun and nature experiences.
Why go hiking in the mountains with children?
Hiking in the mountains is a great way to be active together outdoors. Children learn about animals, plants and landscapes in a playful way, and build self-confidence by overcoming small challenges. The fresh air, the view and the feeling of freedom make it an unforgettable experience for young and old, and form the basis for hiking pleasure later in life.
Tips for a successful mountain hike with children
- Choose the right route: Take into account what your child can handle. Length and height difference are important to keep in mind, but also the terrain. A 3km walk on a reasonably flat, paved path is less tiring than a steeply rising forest path.
- Take regular breaks: It is not only important to take regular breaks, it is also fun. Sitting on a fallen tree trunk for a drink or a small picnic by a stream makes the walk more adventurous and at the same time provides the necessary rest.
- Make it fun: Choose a route where there is a lot to do for children, such as a children's hiking trail, an educational trail or a walk where fairy tales and legends come to life. A route with waterfalls and bridges or an adventurous forest path can also be very adventurous. Along the way you can come up with assignments, such as who can find a gentian first or see the most murmeltiere.
- Be flexible: Children are not always keen to walk, even if it is a nice route. The fun is the main thing on a family walk, so be open to changing your plans if it threatens to become unpleasant.
- Use a baby carrier or child carrier for the little ones: Especially on uneven paths or longer distances.
What to bring?
- Sufficient water and snacks (also something tasty as a reward)
- Sun protection (sunscreen, hat)
- Raincoat and warm layers (the weather can change quickly in the mountains)
- First aid kit
- Hiking poles for children (optional, but often popular)
- Binoculars or magnifying glass to explore nature
Playful elements along the way
Children enjoy paths that offer something extra. Think of:
- Suspension bridges and rocky paths
- Gnome paths or theme walks
- Alpine huts with animals or a playground
- Mountain lakes and streams in which they can paddle
- Chairlifts or cable cars as an adventure in themselves
Safety first
- Pay close attention to the weather forecast and, if in doubt, turn around in time.
- Always keep children by the hand or close to you when approaching precipices.
- Wear good footwear, also for children.
- Don't forget: the mountains are beautiful, but also require respect and preparation.
Hiking with children is an adventure. Both on regular mountain hikes and on special children's hiking trails. If your child likes it, a hiking holiday with children is even an option. Then take into account what your child can do and likes and always ensure safety. A mountain hike with children may take some getting used to for you, but the pleasure your child gets from it is more than worth it. And who knows, he or she may grow up to be just as crazy about mountain walks as you are.
